What are therapeutic grade essential oil?

When you use a Therapeutic Grade Essential Oil, you can be assured that the oil is not only potent and pure, but will produce results that truly will benefit you.  In the US, the FDA doesn’t have any standards or regulations on Essential Oils.  So, it can be hard to know when you are buying an oil at the store whether or not it has been adulterated with chemicals or water; or if they have been distilled properly.  A good rule of thumb to follow, is the cheaper they are, the more likely it has been adulterated in some way or watered down.

Something to note about Young Living Oils, is that they do meet and exceed the AFNOR and ISO standards, which Europe has established.  Young Living Oils are certified as GRAS (generally regarded as safe) and many are certified as Food Additives, so many of them are safe to ingest and are even recommended for added benefit.

Other qualifications to look for in a therapeutic oil include:

Plants: Therapeutic grade oils must come from the proper species of plant.  Young Living grows many of their own plants, owning land in the US and Internationally.  Gary Young, the founder, is committed to providing only the highest grade of essential oil to consumers.  When deciding where to grow the plants, he looks for virgin soil, that has never been touched by pesticides or chemicals.

Processing: Therapeutic grade oils are volatile liquids that must be processed properly to maintain the integrity of the aromatic compounds.  Plants must be distilled at the proper time to maximize the healing constituents in the oil. Therapeutic grade essential oils should be distilled in stainless steel. Any compromise in processing can result in a loss of therapeutic constituents and increased toxins.

Purity: Therapeutic grade essential oils should have nothing added and nothing taken away.  Essential oils may actually be harmful if they are thinned with synthetics or have chemical fillers.

Potency: A true therapeutic grade essential oil will produce results! Before you invest in essential oils, make sure you research where a company gets their supply of plants and how they process those plants.  Young Living never accepts diluted, cut, or adulterated oils. To guarantee consistent quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities, to ensure that they meet stringent specifications, exceed international standards, and contain the optimal levels of natural bioactive compounds.
